Leviticus 2:14, 23:9-14, 22

The origin of most of the popular holidays we celebrate is biblical in nature and designed to honor God, but have evolved or devolved into a commercial shell of their original intent. In today’s lesson, a harvest festival designed to praise God for the abundance of food that will sustain His people occurs. The Israelites were to recognize that their presence in the land was a gift. The land really belonged to God, and he allowed the people to dwell there by his gracious provision. Moses gives the law to the people as a way of preparing them for what would be a regular and permanent act of worship to God.
