Matthew 11:28-30

Last week the message was take up your cross. This week it's my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Those two sit right next to each other in the Gospels, and they are not a contradiction. During this week's lesson we resolve the tension between the two.

The heaviness you're feeling may not be the cost of following Jesus. It may be the cost of carrying something He never asked you to carry.

The four movements of the message:

1. Come as you are. The only qualifications Jesus names are weary and burdened. Not ready, not strong, not cleaned up. The only thing that disqualifies you is pretending you don't need it.

2. Name the yoke He never gave you. Other people's expectations. Performance. Maintaining an image. Doing life and ministry in your own strength. Jesus never handed you those. You can set them down.

3. Take His yoke. It's shared weight. A yoke ties two animals together to pull as one. His is "easy" not because it asks nothing, but because you're pulling with Him and He's doing the heavy work.

4. Rest is proximity, not technique. Jesus didn't say learn these habits. He said learn from me. A vacation changes your location. Real rest changes your center and that comes from staying near Him.

The cross is what you do with the things that were making you tired. The rest is what remains after.
